Gov. Nathan Deal has appointed a new judge to Gwinnett County’s state court.

Deal announced Wednesday that Shawn Fitzpatrick Bratton, a part-time magistrate judge and attorney from Lawrenceville-based litigation group Mahaffey Pickens Tucker, will fill the vacancy left by Judge Randy Rich. Rich was appointed to Gwinnett County Superior Court in May.

According to a news release, Bratton earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Georgia and his law degree from the Georgia State University College of Law. He and his wife, Nidia, have two children and live in Suwanee.

Bratton’s law firm profile said he has previously worked as a prosecutor for both the district attorney and solicitor’s offices. While with the latter, he assisted in the formation and implementation of the Gwinnett County DUI court program.
