TOLEDO, Ohio — The Toledo Mud Hens ended the Gwinnett Braves' two-game winning streak with an 8-0 victory in Game 3 of the four-game series Monday night at Fifth-Third Field.
Toledo got off to a great start against Gwinnett starter Mitch Atkins (L, 1-3) in the top of the first inning. Leadoff batter Ezequiel Carrera laid down a bunt single, but throwing errors by G-Braves catcher Christian Bethancourt and right fielder Derrick Mitchell enabled Carrera to make it all the way to third on the play. Hernan Perez then singled to left, scoring Carrera for a 1-0 Toledo lead. Tyler Collins moved Perez to third with a single to right, while a sacrifice fly out to center by Mike Hessman scored Perez, giving Toledo a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Mud Hens (10-15) were at it again. Toledo put the first two runners on base with a leadoff single by Trevor Crowe and walk by James McCann. After Crowe stole third base, Jordan Lennerton walked to load the bases with no outs. Daniel Field stroked a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Crowe and moving McCann to third. Brandon Douglas then hit a sacrifice fly to left, allowing McCann to score and giving the Mud Hens a 4-0.
Toledo piled it on in the bottom of the eighth off of Gwinnett reliever Luis Vasquez. Collins led off the half-inning with a single to right, Hessman followed with a single to center. Vasquez walked Crowe to load the bases, and McCann followed with a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Collins to up the lead to 5-0. Hessman, who moved to third on the sacrifice fly, scored on a Lennarton single, pushing the score to 6-0. Toledo would score two more runs on a wild pitch and fielding error by Phil Gosselin, increasing the lead to 8-0.
Atkins took the loss, going 6.2 innings, giving up seven hits and four earned runs. He walked three and struck out three. Vasquez had another forgettable outing, giving up three hits and three earned runs in 1.0 inning. He walked two and struck out one.
For the Mud Hens, starting pitcher Robbie Ray (W, 3-2) gave up seven hits and struck out five in 5.0 scoreless innings. Casey Crosby went 2.2 scoreless innings with two hits, one walk and one strikeout. Melvin Mercedes (S, 3) was credited with the save by going 1.1 scoreless, hitless innings.
The G-Braves (14-10) were led at the plate by Joey Terdoslavich. The International League Batter of the Week went 2-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to eight games. Tommy La Stella was 1-for-4 to extend his on base streak to 18 games. Jose Constanza, Gosselin, Todd Cunningham, Edward Salcedo, Jose Yepez and Mitchell each added a hit.
Toledo was paced by Collins who went 3-for-4, while Carrera and Perez added two hits a piece.
The G-Braves and Toledo will conclude the four game series in Toledo Tuesday night. Atlanta’s Gavin Floyd (0-1, 4.86) will be making his fifth rehab start for Gwinnett. The Mud Hens will pitch RHP Derek Hankins (1-1, 5.23). First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
