A former star of Joni Jameson’s favorite soap opera honored her on Friday on a television talk show among 12 semifinalists for an award featuring teachers across the country.
Jameson, a language arts and social studies teacher at Archer High in Lawrenceville, watched “Live! with Kelly and Michael” at school when she was selected by the show’s producers as a teacher who makes their school better and for service and commitment to their students and communities. Jameson was nominated by her mother and two former students.
Jameson said she’s been recognized in her career before, but nothing like this.
“There are all kinds of payoffs for teaching, but this is very humbling,” she said.
“Top Teacher Week” is a segment on the show that was announced in early March, and open to teachers across the country at public and private schools from pre-kindergarten through high school. Jameson is the only semi-finalist from Georgia.
Jameson said she likes to watch the show when she’s home, and host Kelly Ripa used to star on her favorite soap opera, “All My Children.”
There are many rewards for being a teacher, said Jameson, who has been a teacher for 20 years overall. She began her career in Barrow County, and has worked the last 11 in Gwinnett. She previously taught at Berkmar High.
“Getting to work with some amazing kids and watch them develop and become such interesting people,” she said. “It’s pretty amazing somebody would trust me with their children and quite an honor. I don’t have to go to work, I get to hang out with some really great kids.”
Jameson said some of her career highlights have been being named a Teacher of the Year at Apalachee High School, and helping students receive QuestBridge scholarships. She’s also had a yearbook dedicated in her honor.
From the pool of semifinalists, viewers of the show will determine five finalists by voting through 5 p.m. on Monday. To vote, visit, http://livekellyandmichael.dadt.com/uncategorized/top-teacher/.
