SNELLVILLE — Thousands are expected to attend an event Saturday at Eastside Medical Center.
The Snellville hospital and Gwinnett County Parks & Recreation recently partnered to form Live Healthy Gwinnett, an educational and program initiative developed to educate and inspire individuals to make healthy choices to avoid chronic diseases, which are the leading cause of death and disability.
To that end and to launch the campaign, Live Healthy Gwinnett will host a pop-up park from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Eastside Medical Center.
Kicking off the event will be a one-mile “Walk the Talk” with professional leadership and mascots, including Falcons mascot Freddie Falcon and National Peanut Board’s Buddie McNutty, among several local mascots.
The event is free and open to the community and will include fitness demonstrations, free health screenings, inflatables, a rock wall, music, giveaways, life-size chess games, food trucks, cooking demonstrations, healthy shopping tips, gardening activities and CPR/Heimlich demonstrations and certifications by Gwinnett County Fire Department.
There will also be physician lectures, which will include the following:
• 9:30 to 10 a.m. — Dr. Markus Porket, Board Certified by American Board of Cardiology, will discuss importance of exercise, heart disease information, warning signs, and healthy heart tips during the one-mile “Walk the Talk.”
• 10:30 to 11 a.m. — Dr. Suraj Menachery, Board Certified by American Board of Surgery, will discuss healthy eating habits and other tips to avoiding surgical procedures.
• 11:30 a.m. to noon — Dr. Jeff Traub, Board Certified by American Board of Orthopedic Surgery, will discuss “Be Active,” the importance of stretching, joint health and balance.
