Georgia’s rise to national wrestling prominence can take another step this weekend.
The state’s top wrestlers will take on the nation’s best today at Lassiter, the site of the 18th annual Cliff Keen/Wrestling USA Magazine Dream Team Classic. The Team USA vs. Team Georgia dual meet begins at 2 p.m.
“This is probably the biggest event in Georgia wrestling history,” current Lassiter and former Central Gwinnett coach Matt Brickley told the Marietta Daily Journal. “A national dream team is picked every year, and then a dream team from a specific state is chosen, and the two teams go head-to-head in a dual.
“This is the first time Georgia’s been picked to participate in this, which shows just how much Georgia wrestling has grown on a national level. It will be like a chess match out there with all of the strategy. I think it will be the highest-quality dual the state of Georgia has ever seen.”
Five of the 13 weight classes for Team Georgia will feature Gwinnett area standouts. The team also will be coached by a Shiloh grad, Dustin Kawa, the head coach of The Wrestling Academy in Lawrenceville. He will be joined on the staff by Terry Allison, also one of his coaches at the local academy.
Collins Hill’s Sean Russell and Ryan Millhof are Georgia’s representatives at 120 and 126 pounds, respectively. Russell, an Edinboro signee, faces Lehigh signee Scotty Parker of Pennridge, Pa., while Millhof, an Oklahoma recruit, takes on Zeke Moisey, a West Virginia signee from Bethlehem Catholic, Pa.
Buford senior and North Carolina-bound Chip Ness will face Penn State recruit Bo Nickal (Allen, Texas) at 182. The 285 matchup will be Archer’s M.J. Couzan, a Tennessee State football signee, against Edinboro signee Billy Miller of Perry, Ohio.
Apalachee’s Matt Moore, a North Carolina recruit, faces Sage Hecox of Harlem, Ill., at 220.
The other members of Team Georgia are Rockdale’s Alonzo Allen, Jefferson’s Tyler Marinelli, Gilmer’s Cameron Perry, Turner County’s J.J. Alfau, Lowndes’ Matt Moody, Pope’s Jake Henson, Appling County’s Demarko Dixson and Commerce’s Chance McClure.
