GGC pitchers shut down St. Andrews

Junior Kayla Byrom improved to 16-1 on the season, tossing a complete game shutout as the GGC pitching staff held St. Andrews to one unearned run over two games in 9-1 and 8-0 Georgia Gwinnett softball victories on Tuesday in Laurinburg, N.C.

The Grizzlies pushed their record to 29-7-1 with two five-inning, run-rule wins over the Knights (16-19).

Junior Cassidy Littlefield continued her tear, going 4-for-6 on the day with six RBIs and two runs scored to continue a 10-game hitting streak. The infielder belted her sixth home run of the season and fourth long ball over GGC’s last eight games, plus a pair of doubles. Littlefield now has exactly 100 total bases this season- 39 more than any other Grizzly.

Haley Thompson added four hits and four RBIs on the day as GGC belted 23 hits over the two games.

Game 1: GGC 9, St. Andrews 1

Ashley Beyke (13-6) earned a complete-game win of her own in game one, striking out five without issuing a walk.

The Grizzlies connected for four runs in the second inning and three more in the third to build a 7-0 lead.

A defensive error helped push across the Knights’ lone run of the day in the fourth inning, but GGC added two more scores in the fifth and held St. Andrews scoreless in the bottom of the inning to secure the run-rule win.

Littlefield smacked two doubles, while Thompson and Heather Kilar added one apiece.

Five different Grizzlies had a multi-hit game.

Game 2: GGC 8, St. Andrews 0

Byrom lowered her team-leading ERA to 2.66 with five shutout innings, spreading out four hits with two strikeouts and stranding five runners.

Littlefield and Thompson each went 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Mary Burk scored twice and drove in a run for GGC, which scored in every inning but the third.

The Grizzlies built a 4-0 lead by the top of the second and added two more runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings.

Littlefield’s two-run homer was the 11th of the year for GGC, which has a .337 team batting average.

The Grizzlies return home Thursday for a 4 p.m. doubleheader against Voorhees (S.C.) at the Grizzly Softball Complex.
