Registration has begun for Gwinnett’s Losing It!, a 12-week health and fitness program that seeks to create healthy changes in individuals that will last well after the program ends. The program pairs local wellness company Start With The Inside with Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation to help individuals reach weight loss goals and start living healthier.
The trainer for the program, Sandi Porter, believes that Gwinnett’s Losing It! is particularly successful because there is a focus on the emotional aspects of food and weight gain in addition to more standard fitness concepts.
“There’s three components that they learn over the 12-week period. They learn a lot about nutrition and workouts but also the emotional part like trigger foods and why we eat certain things at certain times,” she said. “A lot of people will have an event years ago and they started gaining weight after that. Until they let that go, they’re really unable to lose weight. The emotional part is the biggest thing.”
The program also provides a support group for weight loss and ways to communicate with others going through the same experience. Members of the program will have weekly conference calls, monthly team meetings and a private Facebook group to discuss their experiences. In addition to getting healthy and losing weight, team members also develop friendships that can last a lifetime.
This is Porter’s 10th year running the program and she has seen the impact it has made.
“The people don’t know anybody, know anything about each other, and 12 weeks later they’re best friends. They make friends for life. They all have one thing in common, they want to improve their health,” she said. “It’s amazing how that goal ties them all together. I still have people from my first group that they’re still best friends today.”
Registration is open through April 14 and the program begins on April 19. The program kick-off event and monthly progress report meetings will be held at Rhodes Jordan Park Community Recreation Center in Lawrenceville.
