‘The King of Comedy’

30th Anniversary Blu-ray (PG)

Movie: 3 1/2 out of 4 stars

Disc: 3 out of 4 stars

The fifth collaboration between director Martin Scorsese and leading man Robert De Niro is by far their weirdest, most misunderstood and was each man’s biggest commercial flop. Despite the title, “King” is not a comedy but rather a creepy thriller where De Niro plays Rupert, a beyond-obnoxious guy who thinks he’s the funniest man alive. It’s Rupert’s dream to appear on a late-night talk show hosted by Jerry Langford (Jerry Lewis) and with every polite brush-off Jerry and his producers toss Rupert’s way, he pushes back harder. It’s a brilliant commentary on celebrity stalking and fame obsession.
