HOSCHTON — There was a familiar champion and a new champion as the Gwinnett County Track & Field Championships concluded Tuesday night at Mill Creek’s Markham Field.

The Brookwood girls repeated as county champions by overcoming an eight-point lead held by Mill Creek after Day 1.

But it was the Shiloh boys that came from sixth place after the first day to take the title and break Brookwood’s string of three straight crowns.

On the girls’ side, Brookwood finished with 100 points, followed by Archer in second place with 84.5.

Peachtree Ridge placed third with 67 points, Mill Creek fourth with 58 points and Grayson fifth with 51.5 points to round out the top five.

On the boys’ side, Shiloh won the championship with 107 points, followed by Brookwood in second with 68, Grayson third with 63, Collins Hill fourth with 55.33 and North Gwinnett fifth with 49 in the top five.

“We had some guys really step up today after we had a rough day (Monday),” Shiloh boys head coach Rob Blaszkiewicz said. “Someone like Jeremy McDuffie wasn’t 100 percent and he goes out and wins the 300-meter hurdles for the first time. I really hope this effort by all our guys helps us gauge where we are as region and state come around.”

Addy Lippitt of Peachtree Ridge took home first-place honors in the girls’ 3,200 meters with a time of 11:08.17 to complete the sweep of the 1,600 and 3,200 runs.

Lippitt and Mill Creek’s Lauren Hovis, who placed second at 11:18.51, broke free from a pack of five runners and battled it out over the final four laps.

From there, Lippitt, a University of Georgia signee along with Hovis, steadily increased her lead and eventually pulled away for the 10-second victory.

“I didn’t get out as fast as I wanted to,” Lippitt said. “But once I got out in front, I felt pretty strong. I don’t really go into a race with a real strategy. I kind of like for the dust to settle and then decide how my body feels.”

In the boys’ 3,200 meters, Brookwood’s Miles Yapp came from behind to take the title with a time of 9:17.90.

Kevin Mills of Peachtree Ridge led going into lap No. 7 of the eight-lap race, but Yapp quickly closed the gap and then took the lead for good over the final 500 meters.

“Kevin is such a strong runner and the main plan was just to hang on and stay close,” Yapp said. “When I finally made my move, I knew it was now or never. This is a strong field and it’s good to win here. This is a good test leading to state with so many great runners.”

Peachtree Ridge A captured the girls’ 4x800-meter relay with a clocking of 10:32.23. Jennifer Colker, Allie Grubb, Alexis McKenzie and Chynna Pollitt did the work for the Lions to pick up the win.

On the boys’ side in the 4x800-meter relay, Shiloh A came from behind to take home the title with a time of 8:16.85. Bryan Kamau, Julian McDuffie, Nahom Solomon and Bryant Wright comprised the winning team for the Generals.

Archer’s girls A team was victorious in the 400-meter relay, coming in at 46.53 with Tatiana Wayne, Serenity Douglas, Jacquelyn Switzer and Akua Obeng-Akrofi doing the honors for the Tigers.

Douglas, who is just a sophomore, returned to win the 400-meter dash in a time of 56.13 for Archer.

Archer also picked up wins in in the girls’ 100 and 200 meters as Obeng-Akrofi finished at 11.82 in the 100, which was .01 ahead of Brookwood’s Caitlan Tate at 11.83, and at 24.07 in the 200.

Brookwood freshman Mackenzie Ellison picked up a win for the Broncos in the 800 meters with a time of 2:19.40.

Youth was also present when sophomore Chika Motanya of Grayson took the victory in the girls’ 300-meter hurdles with a time of 46.19.

Grayson boys’ A relay had one of the top performances of the day with a record-setting effort in the 4x100-meter relay.

The foursome of Cedric Asseh, Kiminzki Flint, Kartez Hall and Christian Smith set the Gwinnett County all-time record, Gwinnett County meet record and Markham Field stadium record with a time of 41.43.

Shiloh’s A team of Jeremy McDuffie, Noel Rhymer, Grant Swinton and Aymir Taylor also broke the meet and stadium record with a time of 41.66.

Swinton was also a winner in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.62 while McDuffie also set meet records with victories in the 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles.

McDuffie crossed the finish line in 14.14 in the 110-meter hurdles and came back later to set a new meet record in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 38.30. McDuffie nipped Grayson’s Christian Smith by .09 to take the 300 title.

Norcross got a win in the tightly contested boys’ 400 meters as Nathan Strother won by hitting the finish line in 48.45.

Strother narrowly edged out Shiloh’s Swinton, who crossed in a time of 48.48, and Jeramey Hampton of North Gwinnett, who was third at 48.82.

Travis Collins of Archer set a meet record in the boys’ 100-meter dash with a time of 10.64, beating out Grayson’s Cedric Asseh who came in at 10.70.

Darius Slayton of Greater Atlanta Christian was a close third at 10.71.

Josh Ingalls of Brookwood took his second title of the meet with a win in the 800 meters.

Ingalls, who also took the 1,600 meters crown on Monday, won the 800 with a clocking of 1:53.16 to set a new meet record and move to fifth all-time.

The 4x400-meter relay teams closed out the meet as the Archer A team of Douglas, Wayne, Obeng-Akrofi and Paris Warner won in a time of 3:52.18 while the boys’ title went to North Gwinnett A with Hampton, Trevor Bramblett, John Rooke and Jordan Thomas closing with a time of 3:22.58.
