Charlie Powell, Jr.
Charles Glenn Powell, Jr. of Lavonia, GA passed away peacefully surrounded by family on March 18, 2014 at Hospice House in Anderson, SC after a short battle with cancer. Charlie was born in Asheville, NC, May 25, 1946. He is survived by his wife Betty of the home, mother and father, Reverend Charles Glenn Powell, Sr. and Ruby Pyatt Powell of Marion, NC, son, Brandon Powell and his wife, Megan, of Atlanta, GA, daughter, Alissa Powell Taylor and her husband, Jamie, of Rocky Face, GA, two step sons Chip Ezzard of Asheville, NC and David Ezzard of Lawrenceville, GA, his brother Terry Powell and his wife, Debbie, of Waterloo, SC, and a sister Rebecca Bowman of Central, SC. Three grandchildren also survive him, Josie Taylor, Mabel Taylor, and Monica Ezzard.
Charlie was a 1964 graduate of Central Davidson High School in Lexington, NC. He was the owner of Powell Glass Service in Lawrenceville, GA for many years. Later in his career he obtained his real estate sales and brokers license and thoroughly enjoyed selling properties in the Lake Hartwell area. Charlie never met a stranger and this attitude brought him much success in his real estate career.
Charlie was a member of Lawrenceville Masonic Lodge #131 and the Atlanta Shrine Club. He was an avid race fan, race car owner, driver and pit crew member. He also enjoyed restoring antique cars. He served as a City Councilman while residing in the city of Grayson, GA. Charlie loved life and his family and always maintained a positive attitude even as his health faded.
He has been cremated and a visitation will be held at Strickland Funeral Home in Hartwell, GA from 5 to 8 PM on Thursday April 3, 2014. Graveside services and interment will be held on Friday April 4, 2014 at 2 PM at McDowell Memorial Park, Marion, NC. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 250 Williams St, NW, Atlanta, GA 30303, Rainey Hospice House, 1835 Rogers Rd, Anderson, SC 29621 or the charity of your choice.
