Second-half surge leads Lions past Habersham Central

SUWANEE — It started out a little sluggishly, but Friday’s homecoming game for Peachtree Ridge saw the Lions score 28 points in the second quarter en route to a 49-0 win over Habersham Central.

The Lions (5-0, 3-0 Region 7-AAAAAA) had three interceptions and 19 tackles for loss on defense, allowing 179 yards of total offense, most of which came in the fourth quarter when the second-team defense was in.

“It’s a good win for us,” said Peachtree Ridge head coach Mark Fleetwood. “We were a little sloppy early and we still have penalties we have to clean up, but it’s good to get rolling.”

The Lions went 31 yards on their first drive, culminating in a 16-yard touchdown pass from Chance Thrasher to Tyler Campbell.

Walden Davis intercepted Habersham on its next possession, but a 53-yard field-goal attempt by Evan Pantels came up just short.

Then, the Raiders drove deep into Peachtree Ridge territory only to see Davis intercept another pass and take it 90 yards for the score. However, the run was called back due to a block in the back.

But that didn’t mess up the offense as Jordan Ellis took the ball 73 yards on the very next play to put the Lions up 14-0.

Travis Bowers got in on the interception party on Habersham’s next possession, helping set up another Peachtree Ridge touchdown.

Two plays later, Thrasher found Campbell for a 48-yard score and the Lions were up 21-0.

The Lions added two more scores in the half. The first was an eight-yard run by Ellis on a four-play, 47-yard drive. The second was a 26-yard touchdown pass from Thrasher to Brandon Johnson. That touchdown created a running clock for the final 24 minutes.

In the second half, Peachtree Ridge added two more touchdowns. An ineligible receiver downfield penalty negated a 64-yard TD pass to Myron Burton, but Ellis took it 68 yards on the next play to make it 42-0.

“We need to be getting those touchdowns the first time,” Fleetwood said. “Against some teams, we won’t get a second chance. So, we have to fix a few things there.”

An 18-yard completion from backup quarterback Davis Lackey to DeAngelo Gibbs gave the Lions their final score of the evening.

Ellis finished the game with 197 yards on seven carries, while Thrasher was 6-for-10 for 115 yards and three touchdowns. Campbell led all receivers with three catches for 75 yards.
