JEFFERSON COUNTY WARRIORS (3-AAA)
Coach: Jerry Arnold
Last week: Beat Evans 17-3
WESLEYAN WOLVES (6-AA)
Coach: Franklin Pridgen
Last week: Lost to Brookstone 24-17
Another week, another close loss for Wesleyan. It didn’t come down to the final minute this time, but it was a fourth-quarter loss nonetheless and the Wolves are still in search of their first win this season.
Wesleyan has lost three of its four games by a combined 11 points.
“The kids are working hard,” head coach Franklin Pridgen said. “They realize we’ve been very, very close in three of our games. You can go back to the game film and find correctable errors where we could have found 11 extra points. Our kids know we’re far better than our record indicates.”
The Wolves came back to tie the game at 17 in the fourth quarter, led by backup quarterback Drew Aspinwall. Starting QB Christian Stark banged up his knee and came out of the game in the second half. It’s not a season-ending injury and Aspinwall did an excellent job to get Wesleyan 10 points and tie the game.
“But they marched down the field,” Pridgen said. “We have a defense that starts seven sophomores and they are learning. And some of our older kids are still inexperienced. We’re getting better. We got some great stops against Brookstone, we just couldn’t get one with the game on the line.”
Josh Garrard led the defensive effort with eight tackles and an interception.
The Wolves now face unbeaten Class AAA Jefferson County, which has outscored its opponents 122-31 this season.
Last meeting: Jefferson County won 33-0 last year
