BUFORD — On Oct. 19, the Gwinnett Environmental & Heritage Center is going to see swarmed of humans with their canine companions for the sixth annual Ella’s Run.

Registration is open for runners and vendors.

“Through the years we have, not only donated these emergency units, but we have also contributed funds to Meredith’s Scholarship at The University of Georgia, partnered with humane societies and supported numerous local organizations in need,” said Brent Seyler, vice president of Right to Hike, Inc. “We are so thankful for our partners, like Georgia’s Own Credit Union, and support from our entire Community that afford us the opportunity to support all the various interests that Meredith enjoyed.”

This is the third year that Georgia’s Own has been the presenting sponsor for the run. It is something the company enjoys doing each year.

“Ella’s Run has become one of our favorite events, and we are proud to be the presenting sponsor,” said Marilyn Merritt, branch manager of Georgia’s Own’s Buford branch. “Not only do we get the opportunity to honor an amazing person, we are raising money and awareness for some very important causes.”

The annual race was create to celebrate the memory of Meredith Hope Emerson who went missing on Jan. 1, 2008 while hiking in Blairsville with her dog, Ella, who she had adopted from a rescue shelter. She was found six days later murdered in the woods.

To honor the slain woman, friends and family founded Right to Hike Inc., a nonprofit organization that supports causes that were close to Emerson’s heart, including hiking safety. Funds collected are donated to purchase emergency solar/wireless phones for greenways, parks and trailheads, to fund the Meredith Hope Emerson Award for Study Abroad at the University of Georgia, and to support animal rescues and microchipping.
