When Doug Giacone looks at Habersham Central, he sees something familiar.

“They have made some mistakes that have cost them points in some ball games. They have found some holes and I think it’s hard for them to dig out,” the Mountain View coach said of the winless Raiders. “I can sympathize.”

In an 0-3 start, the Bears continue to find themselves trailing early in games and with a young team haven’t yet learned to overcome the deficit.

Take last Friday. Before two minutes ticked off the game clock, Mountain View trailed Mill Creek 14-0. By quarter’s end it was 28-0.

“You have to respond when adversity hits and we didn’t do a great job of responding on Friday night,” Giacone said. “That’s been the case much of the year.”

Giacone, though displeased with the results, doesn’t question his youthful team’s effort. He had high praise for his dual quarterbacks, Alex Scott and Sam Freitas. Both are sophomores forced into action with an injury to starter Crew Peery.

“They both have made their fair share of good plays and bad plays,” Giacone said. “Those are two kids that have been thrown into a tough situation and I am very proud of how they’ve responded. I’ve got a lot of respect for these two young men for jumping in and taking their lumps as we go.”

Giacone said he’s hopeful the mistakes will fade as his team takes its collective lumps.

“I think it’s a personal belief in their ability. We are trying to instill in those guys a belief that you can accomplish whatever you set your mind to,” Giacone said. “We are going to keep working and trying to eliminate those mistakes.”
