Hebron Christian Lions (8-A)
Coach: Kevin Shaffer
Last week: Beat Cross Keys 36-20
St. Francis Knights (6-A)
Coach: Brennen Booth
Last week: Beat Whitefield Academy 27-14
The Lions have a chance for history Friday as a win would match the best start in the program’s brief history, which would keep the opportunity for setting a new school standard for best start alive.
While coach Kevin Shaffer doesn’t want his players looking too far ahead, he doesn’t mind putting that goal out there to them in order to maintain some confidence gained by two straight wins.
“We talked a little bit about it the other day,” Shaffer said. “It’s a lofty goal, and you’ve got to have some leadership in order to handle that. It would be awesome to get to 4-0, but you’ve got to get to 3-0 first. We can’t overlook (St. Francis).
“Going into (the season opener), I told the kids we need to walk in with a little confidence — with a little swagger. Now they know what it takes to do that, but also know that they need to keep working hard. It’s one of those fine lines.”
To maintain their confidence Friday, the Lions’ defense, led by senior captain Jay Wallo, will need to buckle down on St. Francis’ option offense, which boasts playmakers like QB Joey Roche.
Last meeting: St. Francis won 23-0 last year
