WINDER — An 18-month-old girl died in an overnight house fire in Winder.

Barrow County firefighters received the first call about the blaze near the intersection of Rockwell Church and Moon Bridge roads at about 2:15 a.m. Wednesday, and responded to find a “fully involved residential structure,” Lt. Scott Dakin said. A 50-year-old male, 22-year-old female and 16-year-old female were all taken by helicopter to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.

“I don’t know what their status is right now,” Dakin said. “If we’re lifeflighting it’s not good.”

Shortly before 10 a.m., officials were able to confirm that an 18-month-old girl — believed to be the daughter of one of the female victims, and granddaughter of the male victim — had been killed in the fire. The toddler had been previously deemed “missing.”

“We’re confirming that find now,” Dakin said.

No identities were released Wednesday morning. Dakin said information regarding the child’s whereabouts during the fire would not be released.

Officials weren’t sure how the family was alerted to the fire, or if there were working smoke alarms inside the home, which was ruled a total loss.

Dakin said emergency personnel were just beginning their investigation at about 10 a.m. Wednesday. No fire cause or origin had been determined.

“It’s going to be a lengthy investigation,” Dakin said.
