Helms, Marshall named among top prospects for 2014

NORCROSS — Two Gwinnett County high school baseball players are among seven Georgia players recently listed in the top 100 high school senior prospects for next year’s Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by ninebaseball.org.

The website’s draft expert, Jeff Sullivan, listed Parkview pitcher Mac Marshall as the nation’s No. 25 high school senior prospect, while Norcross catcher Griffin Helms was listed at No. 60.

Marshall, an LSU commit, is the higher-profile Gwinnett prospect, having spent this past summer playing in the Perfect Game All-American Classic and for USA Baseball’s 18U National team at the 2013 IBAF Junior ‘AAA’/18U World Cup after going 6-2 with a 2.33 ERA and 79 strikeouts in 45 innings for the Panthers this past spring.

However, Helms also raised some eyebrows during his participation in several well-known showcase events, including the Area Code Games and the Perfect Game National Academic Showcase.

Helms, who is committed to attend Kennesaw State, hit .314 with two home runs and 11 RBIs and stole 16 bases in helping the Blue Devils to their first state playoff appearance in five years this past spring.
