NORCROSS — A Monday morning fire destroyed a Norcross home.
Gwinnett County firefighters responded to the 2400 block of Windmere Drive at about 9:10 a.m. Monday, finding heavy fire coming from the attic and roof of a single-story home. As crews battled the blaze, they learned that one resident had escaped unharmed.
“The resident stated that there weren’t any working smoke alarms in the house and was alerted to the fire by the odor of smoke in the house,” Lt. Colin Rhoden said.
Firefighters had the blaze under control by about 9:30 a.m., Rhoden said, but not before it burned through the roof and upper floor of the home. Two vehicles were also destroyed.
The house adjacent suffered minor damage from firefighting efforts.
“Firefighters did a great job in proteting the (neighboring) properties and checking for fire extension in them,” Rhoden said.
The cause of the blaze was undetermined and under investigation. No foul play was suspected.
