BUFORD — After smashing Gainesville last week, Buford gave head coach Jess Simpson the result he was looking for with a resounding 63-0 victory over Hancock Central on Friday that left no hint of a let up.

“All week long we were a little beat up from the (Gainesville) game,” Simpson said. “Our coaches did a great job of getting the team ready this week.”

The defense stepped up first for Buford (3-0). After a 68-yard pass completion from Bulldog quarterback Montkevious Fluellen to wide receiver Markel Jones on the first play of the game, the Wolves held firm. They forced a turnover on downs at the 2-yard line.

Taylor Mitchell orchestrated a four-play, 53-yard drive to open the scoring with a 22-yard completion to Tre Neal for the touchdown at the 3:47 mark in the first quarter. It was all Buford from there on out.

Thomas Wilson found the end zone for a 13-yard touchdown run with 3:34 remaining in the first quarter after the Wolves recovered a fumble on the preceding kickoff at the Bulldog 13-yard line.

Ryan Coleman found the end zone next, rushing for a one yard score to put Buford up 21-0 with 1:28 remaining in the first quarter after the Wolves defense forced a 28 yard punt from the back of the end zone and setting the offense up with excellent field position.

To start off the second quarter, Joshua Thomas scored on the ground from the 1-yard line to put Buford up 28-0 just two seconds into the quarter at the 11:58 mark. Tyler Shipman would also score on a one yard run with 8:42 remaining in the second quarter putting Buford up 35-0.

One of the most exciting plays of the night came at the 5:14 mark in the second quarter when quarterback Taylor Mitchell found Steven Reese for a 30 yard touchdown strike down the Wolves sideline.

The top play of the game belonged to Evyn Cooper who reversed field, got a crushing block from a teammate and returned a Bulldog punt 53 yards for the score with 2:45 remaining in the second quarter and putting Buford up 49-0 at the half.

Austin Simpson and Martin Mangram each found the endzone from six yards out in the second half to conclude the scoring for the Wolves who improved to (3-0) on the season.

Taylor Mitchell who started the game at quarterback for Buford finished 6-of-9 for 134 yards and two touchdowns. Josh Thomas, Thomas Wilson, Ryan Coleman, Martin Mangram and Austin Simpson all finished with one rushing score each.

“I was impressed with how the team played tonight,” Jess Simpson said. “We got to play some younger guys and the older guys did a great job of doing what they needed to do.” Adding, “We have a plan, keep focusing on pad-level, great effort and defining our speed of play. We still have a ways to go in the season.”
