DACULA — Major graduation losses and a slow start made Brookwood's chances for the Region 8-AAAAAA softball title look like a long shot.
But the Broncos completed that mission Thursday night.
Amanda Ablan stood out in the circle and with her bat as Brookwood defeated Dacula 3-0 to clinch the Region 8-AAAAAA regular-season title. It also gave the Broncos (10-9, 5-1) the right to host the region softball tournament, which begins Oct. 2.
"I am so proud of our team," Brookwood coach Bill Batchelor said. "We graduated 10 seniors last year and started out this season 0-5. We have a played a difficult schedule and all we ask is for them to work hard and get better each day. They have done that. We still have a ways to go but we are going to enjoy this until we step back on the field on Monday."
Ablan was the winning pitcher vs. Dacula, striking out nine batters and allowing just two hits. No Falcon runner reached second base. Ablan also was 3-for-4 with a double on offense.
Ansley Jones was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs in the victory, while Taiylor Rinehart and Kayla Louie each had a hit, run scored and a stolen base. Avery Reppel was 1-for-2 with a run scored and a stolen base.
