Mill Creek Hawks (7-AAAAAA)
Coach: Shannon Jarvis
Last week: Beat Brookwood 44-10
Mountain View Bears (7-AAAAAA)
Coach: Doug Giacone
Last week: Lost to Pebblebrook 17-13
There are levels football programs leap as coaches try to build successful, sustained teams. A few rungs separate Mill Creek and Mountain View.
The Hawks are 2-0 this season coming off wins over Dacula and Brookwood and are looking to continue to build upon a deep playoff run a season ago. With Carter Governale and Devozea Felton leading the way, the Hawks’ offense keeps racking up points. Last week against Brookwood the defense took a big step, limiting the Bronco running attack to less than 10 yards.
For Mountain View, in the second year under Doug Giacone, the development is about evaluating and coaching his players to limit mistakes and big plays. In both losses this season, big plays doomed the Bears.
“You’ve got some new guys that are starting and you are definitely going to have some growing pains,” Giacone said. “If you take out one or two big plays it significantly decreases the points that we’ve allowed and yardage that we’ve allowed. We haven’t had any problem with effort.”
Just look at Jordan Jones. The Bears defensive end forced a pair of fumbles, turned one into a touchdown and came away with seven tackles in last week’s loss. It was Jones’ second career start. His third comes against a Mill Creek team with an offense scoring more than 40 points a game.
“It’s definitely going to be a great challenge for us this week,” Giacone said. “We try to make sure that as much as our guys are understanding their jobs, that they are having fun playing football.”
Last meeting: Mill Creek won 49-0 last year
