Habersham C. Raiders (7-AAAAAA)
Coach: Michael Pollock
Last week: Lost to Stephens County 49-14
Collins Hill Eagles (7-AAAAAA)
Coach: Kevin Reach
Last week: Beat Dacula 21-13
Habersham’s entry into a Gwinnett-laden region hasn’t gone very well, and Collins Hill contributed to that last season with a 52-0 rout. The Raiders have a pair of lopsided losses already this season, and both came against teams from smaller classifications. That doesn’t bode well for a matchup with a Collins Hill team that is 2-0 and has a streak of five straight playoff appearances.
“We’re healthy and we feel good, but Habersham’s got a pretty good offense,” Reach said. “They’ve churned out a bunch of yards.”
The Eagles counter the Habersham offense with a stingy defense that held opponents scoreless for the first six quarters of the season. That unit’s ability to force turnovers helped Collins Hill hang on for a victory over Dacula last Friday.
Rhyan England led the way with a pair of first-half interceptions, while Tomon Fox, Miles Fox and J.T. Thomas also had exceptional games on defense. Collins Hill did enough to win with its offense, but its coach expects more out of what has been a prolific attack in his six seasons at the school. The offense is still without big offensive tackle Christian Harris, who the coaches hope can return from an injury in the next few weeks.
“Offensively, we still haven’t played close to how good I know we can play,” Reach said.
Collins Hill will host former player Keaston White, who was paralyzed in a 2001 practice, as its honorary captain at Friday’s game. White is now a lawyer.
