Suspected gunman locks down elementary school

LILBURN —A suspected gunman seen near a soccer field by students at Hopkins Elementary temporarily caused the school to go in lockdown mode on Tuesday afternoon.

Gwinnett County Public Schools officials were alerted about the incident at about 1 p.m., spokeswoman Sloan Roach said. Students on a playground behind the school said they thought they saw a man with a gun walking around a soccer field near the school, Gwinnett County Police Cpl. Ed Ritter said.

Hopkins is in the Meadowcreek cluster near Norcross.

Roach said the person was not on campus and did not try to enter the school. The lockdown was lifted in less than an hour, she said.

“Obviously we want to check that out and make sure that’s not a danger to the school,” Roach said.
