There’s definitely a new atmosphere around Winder-Barrow after the Bulldogs came up big in the fourth quarter to beat Jackson County, a playoff team from Class AAA last year, in last week’s season opener.

“Any time you get a win with our schedule, it’s huge,” Bulldoggs coach David Wagner said. “Our region is tough, and our two non-region opponents, Jackson County and Monroe Area, were playoff teams last year. It’s just a huge benefit confidence-wise.

“Some of our young players rose to the occasion. I feel like we all kind of grew up a little bit (last) Friday night.”

The Bulldoggs’ confidence will be sternly tested this week against Monroe Area, which enters the game with a No. 7 state ranking in the latest Georgia Sports Writers Association Class AAAA poll.

The Purple Hurricanes also boast one of the nation’s top college prospects in Auburn-committed quarterback Stanton Truitt, who once attended Peachtree Ridge and put over 300 yards of total offense and accounted for seven TDs in last week’s win over Loganville.

“Monroe Area is fast, athletic, big, strong, physical — every football adjective you can think of,” Wagner said. “And (Truitt) is one of those kids who, when you just film on him, you can see he’s just a special player. You can do everything right (defensively), and he’ll still make a play on you.

“The best way to stop somebody like him is not to let him go on offense and try to slow the game down. We need to control the ball and the clock.”

Last meeting: Monroe Area won 58-14 last year
