STONE MOUNTAIN — Two family pets died during a Wednesday evening house fire in unincorporated Stone Mountain.
Gwinnett County firefighters responded to a split-level home on the 300 block of Nalley Drive just before 11 p.m. Wednesday, finding “moderate smoke and flames showing” from the front of the structure. Crews made an interior attack and contained the blaze to the living room, spokesman Capt. Tommy Rutledge said.
“The blaze caused heavy damage to contents in the room of origin and sent extensive smoke and heat throughout the strucutre,” Rutledge said.
The occupant — who was alerted to the blaze by a blown circuit breaker — escaped the home unharmed. Two cats inside the home did not survive, officials said.
The occuprant denied Red Cross assistance and was planning to stay with nearby relatives, Rutledge said. The cause of the fire is undetermined and under investigation.
