SUWANEE — Halloween is a dentist’s worse nightmare, but one local office is stockpiling the cavity creators as treats for the troops.
On Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., employees at Suwanee Dental Care are collecting candy to donate to the United Service Organization, which is better known as the USO.
“Dr. (Bill) Williams likes to give back to the community and stay involved,” said the office’s business assistant Derrelle Plaskon. “We are doing it for a good reason.”
The sweetest part is for every pound donated, $1 is given back to the donor.
“It’s a cool idea. It’s the first I’ve heard about it,” Plaskon said. “For our office, we’re newbies, but I know a lot of other offices who do this every year. Dr. Williams just told us that he wanted to do this a couple of days ago. We did a full set up in our waiting room with decorations and a scale (set) out.”
While the kids are taking turns to weigh the treats, there will be an activity center for them.
“We did take it a step further — they can draw cards for the troops,” Plaskon said. “We’re making it fun while they wait.”
If you don’t have children or just want to gave back to the cause, you can.
“We’ve actually had several moms called because the preschool and schools parties are (Thursday),” Plaskon said. “They want to bring in the left over candy without taking the money.”
Once all of the candy is collected, it will be picked up, sorted and sent around the world.
“They will pick it up and do the rest,” Plaskon said.
