Monday’s practice at Hebron started a little slow. Slow enough, head coach Kevin Shaffer halted it for some team discipline.

“We started back up and had a great Monday practice,” Shaffer said.

It’s been a disappointing season for the Lions, but Shaffer said his players have impressed him with their dedication. As a former NFL player, Shaffer admits he didn’t always keep the same focus during lost seasons.

“It’s been good,” he said. “In these type of circumstances you don’t know how it’s going to go.”

Typifying the Lions approach is receiver Andrew Redman. The junior snagged a long completion and, even with an injured arm, rushed for a touchdown in last week’s loss to Commerce.

“He’s a huge part of our offense,” Shaffer said. “He’s done some remarkable things for us. He is the prime example you want to have on a football team.”

Redman will play with a cast this week against Athens Academy, a team headed toward the postseason. Shaffer watched a season’s worth of tape on the Spartans and was stunned when they came out last week against George Walton Academy with a straight running attack offense. In their first seven games, Athens Academy ran a spread offense. The new wrinkle forced Hebron to prepare for a pair of looks from the Spartans, an added hurdle for a team mired in a six-game losing streak.

“We don’t know what we are going to get from them,” Shaffer said.

Last meeting: Athens Academy won 44-20 last year.
