Meadowcreek Mustangs (7-AAAAAA)
Coach: George Pugh
Record: 1-7, 1-5 region
Last week: Lost to Mountain View 49-13
Peachtree Ridge Lions (7-AAAAAA)
Coach: Mark Fleetwood
Record: 6-2, 4-2 region
Last week: Lost to Norcross 24-20
Peachtree Ridge began the year 5-0, but has dropped two of its last three games to region co-leaders Collins Hill and Norcross. The Lions can clinch a playoff berth Friday with a victory over Meadowcreek.
“The way I see it, we’re just trying to win our next game,” Peachtree Ridge head coach Mark Fleetwood said. “I think this is an important game for us.”
Peachtree Ridge forced four turnovers in last week’s game against Norcross, including an interception by freshman DeAngelo Gibbs. Linebacker Aaron Harris made 19 tackles. But that wasn’t enough to overturn the 186 yards of total offense by the Lions. Running back Jordan Ellis was held to 61 yards, his fewest yards of the season. Quarterback Chance Thrasher threw for only 126 yards and one TD.
“There was some mistakes in there,” Fleetwood said. “They are by far the best team we’ve played to date.”
Kicker Evan Pantels had field goals of 21 and 42 yards.
“I was really proud of him,” Fleetwood said. “He’s a tough kid and not your typical kicker.”
The Mustangs snapped a five-year, 53-game losing streak this season, but the excitement of that win has been erased by 68-0 and 49-13 losses the last two games. Running back Ryan Moore rushed for 165 yards and one touchdown in last week’s game, while Kortez Towels added a 10-yard TD run.
Last meeting: Peachtree Ridge won 61-0 last year
