DISC SPOTLIGHT: 'Family Tree' Season One

Family Tree

The Complete First Season DVD

Movie: 4 out of 4 stars

Disc: 2 and 1/2 out of 4 stars

More of an extended feature film than episodic TV show, “Family Tree” is the latest creation of Christopher Guest, a former writer for the National Lampoon and the guy behind “Waiting for Guffman” and “Best in Show.” Chris O’Dowd (“Bridesmaids”) takes the lead as a non-descript British man who finds a box of documents left behind by his late aunt and attempts — with great difficulty — to piece together his familys’ ancestral origins. Dry as a bone and loaded with droll sarcasm, “Family Tree” is a high-end, thinking persons’ sit-com.
