No lane closures this week on Winder road project

WINDER — Traffic should be clearer in downtown Winder than in months.

On Monday, the Georgia Department of Transportation have announced the end to round-the-clock double lane closures that have been in place as part of the reconstruction of Broad Street.

Drivers will get a long-awaited break, as the DOT promised no lane closures this week, even if weather permits.

While several weeks ago crews with G.P.’s Enterprises of Statham finished the installation of concrete panels intended to further the life of the downtown street, work is continuing on the nearly $5 mile project, which includes streetscaping.

According to a DOT spokeswoman, curbing and gutter construction will occur in the “bump” out planting areas in the on-street parking area, and crews will work this week on the installation of conduit and the bases for decorative lighting.

The 0.72-mile project along Broad Street, also known as Ga. Highway 11, is scheduled for completion at the end of July 2014.
