Saturday’s Snellville Fall Festival will bring to a close something the city hopes will be a long-standing tradition in the city – a scarecrow contest that gets the community involved.

For the last three weeks, Snellville businesses have been showing off homemade scarecrows in hopes that theirs is labeled the best in the community.

“It’s all about having fun with it,” said Kelly McAloon, the contest organizer. “We wanted to do something different and get the whole community involved.

The contest was originally designed to get both businesses and residents involved. While no residents chose to participate, 22 businesses made scarecrows and have had them on display for the last three weeks.

After signing up and building the scarecrows, businesses placed their creations outside, giving residents a chance to take them all in.

“We provided maps around town for residents so they could see where all of the scarecrows were at,” McAloon said. “Families could take the maps, go around and look at the scarecrows and then vote on who their favorite one was.”

The results of the voting will be announced at today’s Fall Festival with the first-place winner getting $100 and a trophy. Second place will get $75 and third place will get $50.

In addition, all of the scarecrows will be in a silent auction with all proceeds going to the Southeast Gwinnett Co-Op.

“It’s a win-give situation and everyone wins,” McAloon said.

McAloon said she knows the contest will grow next year since many residents asked how they could get into the contest after the deadline had passed.

“Next year I know it will be three times bigger,” she said. “Since it started, people have asked to get into the contest. They all thought it was a cool idea.”

For Mary Hollowell, her team at Ally’s Attic was excited to jump into the contest.

“We thought it was for a good cause and it’s a great idea for our community in Snellville,” she said. “It was fun creating the scarecrow. We enjoyed finding stuff the create our scarecrow.”

Hollowell added that she remembers events like this when she was growing up that created a chance for the community to interact.

“It brings the community together and is a lot of fun,” Hollowell said.

McAloon said it was important to do something different as a way of engaging the community.

“It gets people involved and gave families a chance to take a few hours together and go look at all the scarecrows,” she said. “I’ve had many people tell me how much fun they had with their families looking at the scarecrows, and that was our goal.”

In addition to the silent auction and announcement of the scarecrow contest winners, the fall festival will feature multiple other contests and activities for kids, as well as live entertainment.

“It’s going to be a lot of fun and we look forward to the community coming out to enjoy the festival,” McAloon said.
