NORCROSS — Greater Atlanta Christian remained unblemished on the season with a dominant 52-7 win over Hapeville Charter on Friday night.
Coming off their second bye week, the Spartans were ready to get rolling again and continue what has been a very impressive run so far in 2013.
“We were just ready to get out here again and get going,” GAC head coach Tim Hardy said. “We played good tonight. Our defense was great as always and got us set up to make some big plays early. It was a good win and the guys did a good job.”
The defense was stellar, only allowing two first downs in the first half, one of which came on Hapeville’s first play from scrimmage on an 18-yard run by Antoine Wilder. The Spartans (8-0, 2-0 Region 6-AA) also scored on defense when Ross Wood picked off a Hapeville pass and returned it 35 yards down the left sideline for a touchdown early in the second quarter giving GAC a 38-0 lead.
GAC scored on its first six possessions of the game building up a 45-0 halftime lead, which allowed backups to get in at many positions before the half was over. After a six-yard punt by the Hornets on their first possession, the Spartans went to work, going 46 yards on just four plays and scoring on a 13-yard TD pass from quarterback Rafe Chapple to Chris Williams.
Chapple had two TD passes, including a 48-yard strike to Darius Slayton that capped off a very efficient night — he was 6 of 8 for 110 yards.
Hapeville (0-7-1, 0-3 Region 6-AA) was forced into five different three-and-out situations and one turnover on downs in the first half, giving the Spartans solid field position. GAC took full advantage with quick scores. Jaelen Venable had two rushing TDs and 108 yards on just 11 carries. The Spartans rushed for a total of 242 yards and had four TDs on the ground.
GAC kicker Brandon Holzgrefe was perfect on his point after attempts and had the first score of the game with a 29-yard field goal.
