Mountain View Bears (7-AAAAAA)

Coach: Doug Giacone

Record: 1-6, 1-4 region

Last week: Lost 37-6 to Norcross

Meadowcreek Mustangs (7-AAAAAA)

Coach: George Pugh

Record: 1-6, 1-4 region

Last week: Lost 68-0 to Collins Hill

When George Pugh watches film of Mountain View he sees a team similar to his. It’s more than just the record, he sees a team fighting for wins against the state’s top teams and he stresses the effort and the desire. He sees a young team, but one with more depth than his Mustangs.

“They are a little more talented than our football team,” the Meadowcreek head coach said. “They have a little more speed than we do. We have to play an almost perfect ball game to give ourselves a chance.”

It’s happened once this year already for the Mustangs, who ended a 53-game losing streak with a win over Habersham Central. And the Mustangs have another shot at a win this season. Pugh even found a silver lining to last week’s lopsided loss to Collins Hill. The Meadowcreek coach suspended 12 of his seniors for the game for missing school and practice the week prior. He turned to his younger players, including five freshmen, two on the offensive line. Meadowcreek didn’t find the end zone but Ryan Moore did rack up 116 yards on 19 carries.

“People don’t know how good this kid really is,” Pugh said of Moore. “He performed miracles.”

Mountain View also watched a running back turn in one of his top performances of the season a week ago in a loss to Norcross. Nick Harris rushed for 109 yards on 25 carries against the Blue Devils and quarterback Crew Peery threw for 44 yards on 7 of 12 passing.

Last meeting: Mountain View won 48-7 last year.
