HAPEVILLE CHARTER HORNETS (6-AA)
Coach: Winston Gordon
Record: 0-6-1, 0-2 region
Last week: Lost to Lovett 49-0
GAC SPARTANS (6-AA)
Coach: Tim Hardy
Record: 7-0, 1-0 region
Last week: Had a bye
Coming off a second bye week, with another struggling program on tap, Greater Atlanta Christian will once again be putting the focus on itself.
The top-ranked Spartans are outscoring their opponents by an average of 52-11 and haven’t lost a game yet. The closest matchup was a 48-26 win over Stone Mountain in the season opener. GAC has only gotten more effective since then. But head coach Tim Hardy sees room for improvement if the Spartans want to get to the top of the mountain.
“We haven’t been as consistent as we’d like on special teams,” Hardy said. “We’ve allowed a few too many big plays on defense and we need to be more efficient in the red zone.”
Two weeks ago, GAC officially earned a spot in the state playoffs with a 49-3 drubbing of Westminster in the first region game of the season. Because of how the GHSA set up Region 6-AA, one victory there assures a team of making the postseason.
The Spartans have their sights trained on a prize well beyond that.
But first it’s winless Hapeville Charter on homecoming.
“We need a clean game,” Hardy said. “We need to be sharp out of the gate.”
They’ve been particularly impressive on defense this season with the line making a real difference each night. Inside linebackers Tyler Cooksey and Paul Carothers are complimented by linemen Price Roberts, Mitchell Shea and Mitchell Milovich, who have all been a physical force this season.
Last meeting: GAC won 38-20 last year
Directions to GAC: From I-85, go east on Indian Trail Road and school is on the right.
