After being nudged out of the No. 1 spot in 2012 by west coast rivals Bakersfield, Calif., Gwinnett County Relay for Life is back on top.

The American Cancer Society’s 2013 event in Gwinnett County raised $1,847,815 to put it at the top of the list of money raised by Relay events worldwide. Bakersfield raised $1,690,363.

“We’re excited that Gwinnett has re-captured the title of the largest Relay For Life event in the world,” said Sheila Fowler, co-chair of the 2013 Relay for Life. “I’m amazed by the strength of the Gwinnett community, the dedication of our Relay For Life Teams, and the commitment from our sponsors. This is a life-changing event for cancer survivors, caregivers, and the community.”

Rounding out the top five fundraisers were Eugene/Springfield, Oreg., with $697,090 raised, Lancaster, Pa., with $676,484 and Cobb County Georgia Relay for Life raising $655,400.

This year’s Gwinnett Relay for Life was held in May at the Gwinnett County Fairgrounds.
