WINDER — In a defensive struggle where yards were a premium, Loganville turned two Winder-Barrow turnovers into points before pulling away late for an 18-0 win at W. Clair Harris Stadium in Winder.
Ball security was an issue for both teams. On the opening drive Loganville (4-3, 3-2 Region 8-AAAAA) quarterback Josh Laughlin appeared on his way to a touchdown before coughing up the ball up at the goal line. Winder-Barrow’s Bradyn Randall recovered in the end zone to thwart the first Red Devils threat.
However Winder-Barrow (1-6, 0-5 Region 8-AAAAA) was unable to capitalize. Two plays later the Doggs fumbled back to the Devils at the Winder-Barrow 15-yard line. But the Bulldoggs defense stiffened, forcing a 34-yard Blake Salter field goal to give the Devils a 3-0 lead.
“If they get the ball down inside the 30 and you hold them to a field goal, that’s about all you can ask them to do defensively,” said Winder-Barrow head coach David Wagner.
That score held until early in the third quarter when another Bulldoggs turnover led the Loganville points. On the first play of the second half, a botched handoff in the Winder-Barrow backfield was recovered by the Devils on the Bulldoggs 18-yard line. In the shadow of their own goal line the Bulldoggs defense again stoned the Red Devils, leading to Salter’s second FG of the game, this time from 31 yards.
“You work on the fundamentals and you do it in practice, and then you have an unexpected lapse in the game it’s critical,” said Wagner.
Winder-Barrow playmakers Chandon Sullivan and CeCe Green were unable to find running room against a tough Loganville defense, which held the Bulldoggs to two first downs the entire game.
“They did a good job of mixing some things up with their outside linebackers and they were able to get pressure,” said Wagner. “They are a solid football team. Whenever we were able to get guys in space that made some great open field tackles. Loganville played particularly well.”
After Salter extended the lead to 9-0 with his third FG of the game, another Bulldoggs miscue led to a Loganville score midway through the 4th quarter when Winder-Barrow quarterback Hunter Cooper was tackled in the end zone after an errant snap over his head for a safety. Winder-Barrow surrendered the only TD of the game on a late 25-yard run by Jerry Devert.
