DISC SPOTLIGHT: 'The Way, Way Back'

The Way, Way Back Blu-ray (PG-13)

Movie: 4 out of 4 stars

Disc: 4 out of 4 stars

The first great movie of 2013 is a superb coming-of-age story that takes the best elements of “American Graffiti,” “Meatballs,” “16 Candles” and a few others, “The Way, Way Back” is whip-smart, funny, often serious, always insightful and heartwarming without ever getting close to being sappy. Liam James plays Duncan, an introverted 14-year-old whose mother (Toni Collette) is dating a wealthy lout (Steve Carell) and slowly figures out how to make the most of a summer at a New York beach. The crack ensemble cast also includes Allison Janney, AnnaSophia Robb, Sam Rockwell, Amanda Peet, Rob Corddry and Maya Rudolph.
