This was one of Buford’s closest region games of the season a year ago. The Wolves won by 31. But with the Dawson County sitting at just one region loss, this is as big a game for the Tigers as it is the Wolves. Unbeaten Buford wants to keep pace with fellow unbeaten North Hall and Dawson County is trying to stay in the mix for one of the playoff spots in the region.
But like most years, Buford seems as formidable as ever.
The Tigers, who scored 42 points a week ago, haven’t shown a consistent offensive attack, twice scoring under 10 points including a 31-0 shutout by North Forsyth. Not a good recipe against a Buford defense that has allowed 27 points all season, less than five a game. Before giving up a touchdown last week, the Wolves were riding three straight shutout wins of 63-0. White County scored in the final minutes after the Wolves didn’t allow it a first down over the first three quarters.
Like any Buford team in recent years, it’s a deep defense with players like junior Steven Reese aiding on 13 tackles and team leader Ryan Coleman topping the tackle chart with 18. Eight Wolves had 10-plus tackles, including Donte Gordon who leads the team with four sacks.
And it’s a defense helped by an offense with just six punts and special teams forcing opponents to a starting field position of the 22-yard line.
Last meeting: Buford won 34-3 last year.
