Four new principals could be announced at BOE meeting

Students, teachers and parents at four Gwinnett schools could learn who will lead their school on Thursday.

The newest principals at Beaver Ridge Elementary, Berkmar High, Bethesda Elementary and Peachtree Elementary could be announced at the regular monthly meeting of the Gwinnett County Board of Education.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if they are,” Gwinnett County Public Schools spokesman Jorge Quintana said.

Principals at those schools transferred to other positions within the district or announced their retirement earlier this school year.

The school calendar for the 2014-15 year is also expected to be presented to the BOE at an afternoon work session. The first day of school will be Aug. 6, 2014, Thanksgiving break wil be Nov. 24-28, 2014, winter break will be Dec. 22, 2014-Jan. 5, 2015, spring break will be April 6-10, 2015 and the last day of school will be May 20, 2015.

Board members are also expected to hear a presentation of two new initiatives: Academies and a dual language immersion program.

Five GCPS high schools next year will have the academy model that will focus on a specific subject area, which is one of three “inter-connected strands.” Those strands are a transformation of teaching and learning, the transformation of the secondary school experience and the transformation of business and civic engagement.

Three elementary schools next year will begin a dual language immersion program where students will spend half of their day in a target language, and the other half in English. The program will use a two-teacher model where one teaches exclusively in the target language, and the other teaches in English.
