Third-quarter surge lifts Peachtree Ridge over Mnt. View

DULUTH — Peachtree Ridge was locked in a tight battle for a half, but the Lions eventually pulled away for a 38-13 win over visiting Mountain View Friday night.

Following a tight first half in which both teams moved the ball well, the Lions took control in the third quarter and broke open the game with three quick scoring drives. Running back Jordan Ellis scored three of his four touchdowns in the third-quarter explosion for the Lions.

“The line opened up the holes and I just took advantage of that,” Ellis said. “We struck quickly in the third quarter to take control of the game.”

Peachtree Ridge (6-1) jumped on the board with its opening drive as Ellis scored on a 9-yard run capping a quick, five-play scoring drive. The drive was highlighted by the passing of quarterback Chance Thrasher and the running of Ellis. The Lions led 7-0 at the 10:02 mark of the first quarter.

Midway thru the first quarter, Mountain View’s Matt Buddan gave the Bears great field position with a fumble recovery at the Lions’ 15 yard line. Following a pass completion from Crew Peery to Andre Joseph to the 1-yard line, Peery scored on the next play. Following a missed PAT the Bears trailed 7-6 with 5:17 remaining in the first quarter.

The Lions capitalized on a long, nine-play drive late in the second quarter when Thrasher connected with Kendall Cobb on a 5-yard TD pass. Thrasher was 4-for-4 on the drive for 54 yards.

The Bears (1-4) rallied with a 4-yard TD pass from Peery to Joseph with only 15 seconds remaining in the second quarter. The score completed a successful two-minute drill with a quick, eight-play drive that cut the Lions’ lead to 14-13.

“We were sluggish and having trouble getting things going in the first half tonight, but give Mountain View some credit for that,” said Lion head coach Mark Fleetwood. “We made some adjustments at halftime which seemed to get us going in the third quarter. Our defense also stepped it up with some key stops.”

Peachtree Ridge wasted no time in the third quarter as Thrasher hit Brandon Johnson on a 45-yard pass play. Ellis finished the two-play drive with a 16-yard TD run. The Lions led 21-13 with 11:25 still in the third quarter.

On the Bears’ next possession the Lion’s defense forced a turnover as Jace Capps intercepted a Peery pass on the Mountain View 42. Ellis then scored once again, this time on a quick hitting 12-yard TD run that completed an explosive three-play drive increasing the Lions’ lead to 28-13 at the 6:53 mark of the third quarter.

To complete their third quarter domination, Ellis scored on a 3-yard run to break open the game by giving the Lions a 35-13 lead with only 1:31 left in the third quarter. The drive was set up by a 40-yard interception return by Walden Davis.

“We now have an off week and then Norcross. The off week comes at a good time as it will give us time to heal and get ready for them,” said Fleetwood.

Ellis finished the night with 174 yards on 23 carries and four touchdowns for the Lions. Thrasher also had a great game as he was 21 for 29 with 203 yards and a touchdown.
