DULUTH — North Gwinnett took home the Area 6-AAAAAA Volleyball tournament championship as they defeated Mountain View 25-20, 25-21 and 24-14.
“We really had good serving tonight, ” North Gwinnett coach Vanessa Henry said. “We had some lapses here and there but our maturity showed and it never got out of reach. When Mountain View led it was early and we were able to come back.”
Mountain View (32-14) was playing its third match of the night as it had to come through the losers bracket to face the Bulldogs ( 41-6). The Bears defeated Mill Creek in two sets and Peachtree Ridge in three sets to make the finals.
Against North, their luck ran out. In game one, the score was tied at 12 when the Bulldogs went on a 6-2 run to gain the upper hand at 20-14 before closing it out while trading points.
In the second game, again the teams were knotted at 12 but this time the Bears would not be defeated as easily. With the score tied at 18, North put together at string of six straight points to seize control of the game and eventually closed it out at 25-21.
The third and final game saw North race away from a 15-12 lead and bring home the Area crown.
“Elizabeth Moss stepped in due to injury and really gave us a lift,” Henry said. For Mountain View coach Stan Carpenter the runner up finish was the second in school history, though that came against non-Gwinnett teams.
“Tonight we beat two schools (Mill Creek and Peachtree Ridge) that beat us three weeks ago,” he said. “We are peaking at the right time.” Named to the all Area tournament team were: North: Carson Nevels, Alyssa Munlyn and McKenzie Cronic. Mountain View placed Jordan Screen on the squad. Others from Gwinnett included: Lauren Cole (Duluth), Courtney Oster (Collins Hill), Tearra Tatum and Brittney Thomas (Peachtree Ridge), Emily Rose, Carley Eiken (Mill Creek). Munlyn was named the Tournament MVP.
