Smoke forces brief evacuation at elementary school

LAWRENCEVILLE — A local elementary school was briefly evacuated Tuesday during a fire scare.

Gwinnett County firefighters responded to Freeman’s Mill Elementary School in Lawrenceville shortly after 11 a.m. Students at the school off Old Peachtree Road were evacauted after smoke triggered alarms.

“Students were evacuated and were out of the building about 30 minutes while fire officials checked the building,” Gwinnett County Public Schools spokesperson Sloan Roach said shortly before noon Tuesday. “They are heading back in now.”

The smoke was believed to have come from an air conditioning unit, Roach said.
