BUFORD — Gwinnett County police are investigating a fatal wreck in Buford that occurred Friday afternoon.
Cpl. Jake Smith said the crash occurred at Peachtree Industrial Boulevard and South Waterworks Road, where an off-duty police officer was controlling traffic for a funeral procession.
The officer had stopped traffic along Peachtree Industrial to allow the procession to cross Waterworks. When the last vehicle in the procession had cleared the intersection, the officer released the traffic. Smith said a maroon SUV on Waterworks Road ignored a red light and attempted to cross the intersection. The SUV was struck on the passenger side by a white pickup truck traveling on Peachtree Industrial with a green light.
The passenger of the SUV, an elderly female, was killed, while the driver, an elderly male, was transported to a local hospital. The driver of the pickup truck was not seriously injured.
“It is possible the SUV was attempting to catch up to the funeral procession, but this has not been confirmed,” Smith said. “Drugs and alcohol are not considered factors in the accident at this time.”
