THOMSON — Micah Abernathy rushed for three touchdowns and Rafe Chapple passed for two more as visiting Greater Atlanta Christian (6-0) overpowered Thomson 56-12 Friday night.
Abernathy scored on runs of 70, 40 and 40 yards. Chapple connected to Chris Williams on an 85-yard TD play on the first play of the game and then in the second quarter the senior threw a 65-yard TD pass to Justin Phan.
“I saw some good things,” GAC head coach Tim Hardy said. “Thomson is a physical team and we challenged our team this week. Our defense was very physical tonight.”
Ross Wood also scored twice for the Spartans. Wood, a senior, scored on a 70-yard punt return and just before halftime, he intercepted a pass and returned it 45 yards for the touchdown.
“Ross had a good game,” Hardy said. “He returned well, he had the interception, he tackled, punted and overall did a nice job.”
GAC closed out its scoring in the fourth quarter as Berkeley Bogan connected on a 5-yard pass to Williams.
Chapple completed 10 passes for 253 yards, Abernathy rushed for a total of 186 yards and Williams had 149 receiving yards to lead the Spartans.
GAC opens its Region 6-AA play next week as it travels to face Westminster.
