GGC makes another addition to athletic department

The Georgia Gwinnett College Office of Athletics has named Mike Smith, formerly of XOS Digital with the Sun Belt Conference, as the Grizzlies’ coordinator of athletics corporate sponsorships.

Smith has over 16 years of sales, marketing and capital campaign experience in collegiate and professional athletics, including stints at major universities in the Southeast.

“Mike will be a key addition to our athletics staff,” GGC athletic director Darin Wilson said. “We aim to provide excellent resources and opportunities for our student-athletes and Mike will hit the ground running to ensure that we are equipped to do that. His mission will be to develop corporate relationships that strengthen our brand while further connecting Grizzly athletics with the local community.”

Most recently, Smith served as general sales manager for Sun Belt Sports Properties at the conference headquarters in New Orleans for XOS Digital. He was responsible for development and execution of the Sun Belt’s over-65 corporate sponsorships, primarily in the areas of event management, championships and digital media.

Prior to his time with the conference, Smith was the corporate business development manager for the NBA’s New Orleans Hornets. While with the Hornets, he successfully sold official sponsorship rights in a number of areas and coordinated efforts with team partners.

Smith spent the previous 11 years in college athletics, highlighted by stints at some of the nation’s top programs.

He began at Georgia Tech with the former International Sports Properties in 2000, becoming associate general manager for Yellow Jacket ticket sales initiatives, advertising opportunities and corporate accounts.

Smith then spent three years each in a similar capacity with Learfield Communications at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Telesouth Communications with Ole Miss Sports Properties.

His most recent position in the collegiate ranks came at Florida Atlantic University in 2011, where Smith was the associate director of athletics for corporate sponsorships.

A native of Eden, N.C., Smith holds a bachelor’s degree in communications from North Carolina State University and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Tennessee.

He married the former Katy Stennett earlier this year and the couple now resides in Gwinnett County.
