GRAYSON — A Friday evening fire at a storage facility in Grayson is under investigation.
Upon arrival about 5:30 p.m., crews found black smoke showing from a self storage unit at Secure Lock Storage, 1573 Athens Highway S.W. A passerby had reported seeing smoke coming from the building.
Crews found fire burning in two storage units at the end of the large, one-level self storage facility.
“Firefighters quickly deployed attack hose lines to battle the blaze and protect adjoining exposure units,” fire department spokesman Capt. Tommy Rutledge said. “Fire crews forced entry inside eight other storage units (within the same building) in close proximity to the fire to check for extension.”
The fire was contained to three storage units but sent smoke throughout several others.
“The firefighters did a great job of stopping the spread of the flames and protecting the rest of the building,” Rutledge said. “The damaged units contained only clothing and furniture items. There were no hazardous contents involved.”
The exact cause of the fire is under investigation by the fire department. No one was at the storage building when firefighters arrived and no injuries were reported. An employee inside the office at the time was able to open the entrance gates to allow quick access to responding fire apparatus, Rutledge said.
