SUWANEE — Host North Gwinnett, off to an impressive start, has a chance for a sweep in the Jared Cook Tip-Off Classic.
The Bulldogs play Hillcrest of South Carolina on Tuesday at approximately 8:30 p.m. in the final game of the annual event after following up a victory over Effingham County with one against Tucker on Monday night.
Senior point guard Ahmad Caver had 28 points to lead the 71-59 victory over the Class AAAAA state contender as the Bulldogs shot 80 percent (24 of 30) at the foul line. Caver made 9 of 11 free throws and also had four assists.
Tobias Howard added 15 points and Kamaran Calhoun scored 14 with eight rebounds for North. Owen Lewis had nine points for the Class AAAAAA Bulldogs, who made 5 of 10 3-pointers and shot 44 percent overall.
North led 16-12 after the first quarter, 33-24 at halftime and went up by 15 with six quick points to start the third quarter. Tucker then went on a 17-2 run to tie the game, but Owen Lewis’ 3-pointer at the buzzer put the Bulldogs up 47-42 going into the final quarter.
Soon North, which is still without five football players, was back up by 12 points and salted away the victory at the foul line.
“These were good wins for us,” North coach Zach Smith said. “Those were both good teams.”
Tucker defeated Class A power North Cobb Christian 61-54 on Saturday, but the Tigers couldn’t pull off a victory over North, which edged Effingham County 69-66 on Saturday.
Jon Dunmyer led Tucker with 15 points.
