For the first time in three years, the Norcross wrestling team is holding onto the Battle of Norcross trophy.
The Blue Devils went 3-0 on Saturday, including a 40-30 win over rival Meadowcreek to re-claim the trophy. Norcross also defeated Stephenson and Druid Hills.
Jermaine Hall (126 pounds) and Tim Brown (285) went 3-0. Hall had two pins and Brown three. Nick Jones (182), Michael Gaylor (170), Michael Cunningham (132), Tevin Shaw (132) and Juan Espino were 2-0.
Defending champs begin with win
The Archer wrestling team started the season the way it finished last season, by coming out on top.
The defending state champions won the 16-team Lassiter Invitational on Saturday, defeating No. 2 ranked Collins Hill and Class AAAAA’s No. 1 Pope.
The Tigers placed 11 wrestlers in the top four, including tournament champions Vinny Artigues, Chris Diaz, Thomas Bullard, Elliott Lee, and Jacob Lill. The team was without state champion M.J. Couzan, who is still playing football.
The Tigers are ranked No. 34 in the country by Intermat and compete next weekend at Allatoona.
Broncos win Dacula Duals
Brookwood went 5-0 on Saturday to win the Dacula Duals. The Broncos defeated Heritage 42-31, Southeast Whitfield 47-31, East Paulding 69-12, Elbert County 62-18 and Dacula 63-15.
Camyn Boddyn (106), Miles Nolan (152), James Pham (160) and Stephen Solamon (182) were 5-0.
Austin Williams (113), Thanh Nguyen (120) and Thommy Thai (195) were 4-1.
Duluth wins pair of matches
Duluth went 2-3 on Saturday, picking up wins over Baldwin County (60-24) and Shiloh (60-24). The Wildcats lost to Luella (63-12), North Gwinnett (58-12) and Central Forsyth (53-30).
Rodney Jones (182 pounds) led the team with a 5-0 record, including five pins. Alex Brown (220) was 4-0 with four pins, Aaron Black (160) was 3-0, Larry Davis (285) was 3-2 and Jon Starks (170) was 2-1.
