New area code to be used in metro Atlanta

Phone numbers issued in the metro Atlanta area have run the gamut of 404 and 678 area codes, and a new three-digit number will be used in the region.

The North American Number Planning Association, the national organization that assigns area codes, will begin using 470 area codes.

John Manning, senior director for the North American Number Planning Association, said the 470 area code was actually put into service in 2010.

“It’s only within the past couple weeks we exhausted the quantity avail of 404 prefixes,” Manning said. “We would expect to start seeing some (470) assignments shortly.”

The 404 area code is one of the original area codes dating back to the 1940s and ’50s. The 770 area code was assigned in 1995, followed in 1998 by the 678 area code, which overlaid the same geographic area as the 404 and 770 area codes.

No existing phone numbers will change.
