Dean Tate Smith age 72, of Lawrenceville, GA passed away on Saturday, November 9, 2013. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years Jan Smith, daughters and sons-in-law, Shari Lynn and Michael Cook of Lawrenceville, GA, Sandi and Butch Benford of Atlanta, GA; son, Dean Tate Tiger Smith, Jr. of Johns Creek, GA; sisters, Edith Ann Puryear of Scottsdale, AZ and Alwayne Ruffner of Chattanooga, TN; grandchildren, Stephen Cook, Matthew Cook, Spencer Tate Benford, Mitchell Benford, Camden Dean Smith and Ryann Benford, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Dean was a devoted husband and father, as well as a doting grandfather. He was a professional photographer and gifted musician. He enjoyed playing his calliope in numerous festivals and parades, using it to raise funds and awareness for veterans affairs and organ donation. He served as a proud member of the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam Era. He was a tireless supporter of organ donation, having been a recipient of a kidney transplant in 2000. He will be sorely missed, but fondly remembered by all who knew him.
The Service Celebrating the Life of Dean Tate Smith will be held Thursday, November 14, 2013 at 11:00am at Tom M. Wages Lawrenceville Chapel with Pastor Nick Riggins officiating. Interment will follow at 2:30pm at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA with Military Honors. The family will receive friends Wednesday, November 13, 2013 from 6:00pm to 9:00pm at the funeral home.
